Ilmakehätieteissä tutkitaan ilmakehien fysikaalisia, kemiallisia ja meteorologisia ominaisuuksia.

Osaston painopistealueet ovat:

• Ilmakehän aerosolit: ilmastonmuutos ja terveysvaikutukset
• Mikrometeorologia: ekosysteemien ja ilmakehän vuorovaikutukset, hiilinielut
• Meteorologian laskennalliset menetelmät: ilmastotutkimus, säänennustusmallien kehittäminen, Marsin kaasukehä
• Säätutka: Tutkamittausten kehittäminen
