1. Markku Kulmala opened the meeting at 18:30.

2. The schedule for the evaluation for the Nordic Center of Excellency application on 25.9.2002 was introduced. The purpose of this meeting is to go through tomorrows schedule and to practice for tomorrows evaluation meeting.

2.1 An introductory round was made. Everybody told who they are and what their interests are.

2.2 The scientific interests and backgrounds of the evaluators, Sanoy Harrison, Chris Thomas, Ruprech Jaenicke, were considered and parannus and laajennus suggestions for introductions were considered.

2.3 General practical arrangements were considered
2.3.1 Our presentation group will be about 20 persons and the gender distribution should be even.
2.3.2 The need for nametags with flags was considered.
2.3.3 We should not sit in groups of nationality or labs, but mixed up.

2.4 Markku Kulmala presented the transparencies that he intended to show the evaluators as a general introduction.
i) introduction of laboratories and their heads
ii) intertwining of our group
iii) our aims in science
iv) interactions of different atmospheric phenomena
v) IGBP II
vi) work packages and how they are linked to each other
The need for another overhear projector so that this transparency can be shown all the time was considered. There will also be some power point presentations and Marja-Liisa Riekkola will bring a projector for it.

2.5 Student Alf Grini from Oslo showed his presentation about NCoE from his point of view as a student.

2.6 There was talk about how to proceed from the general presentation and if everybody should introduce what work packages their labs are involved with. It was agreed that everybody should give their presentations and that we should then return to talking about tomorrows program and the order of presentations.

2.7 The presentations were given and commented by everybody, intention was to get them all to be under 5 minutes and understandable for the evaluators.
i) Sara Pryor, Atmosphere-surface exchange
ii) Monica Mårtenson, Sea salt particles, emissions and lab experiments and urban particles. There was talk that somebody else should tell about the urban part.
iii) Hannele Hakola, Biogenic emissions of VOCs
iv) Markku Kulmala gave Anca Gamans presentation, Organic aerosol formation modeling. There was talk that it is too long and that nucleation events and Hyytiälä banana shape curves should be shown instead and if Hanna Vehkamäki should give it instead of Anca.
v) Merete Bild, Chemistry and thermodynamics of organic aerosols, formation and growth.
vi) Ari Laaksonen, two options either group or QUEST presentation. It was decided that a combination is a best solution.
vii) Marja-Liisa Riekkola, Making new instrumentation and methods for analyzing organic particles. Masahiko Shimmo will also show one transparency of results for his work on this area.
viii) Douglas Nilsson, his view on how the work of different universities in this application are linked together and some results of his own group.
Everybody told how their work is linked with others in the group.

2.8 There was general discussion about How NCoE will function and what will be the result or product from it.
- Dynamic leaders for WPs and the jako of data through the internet, Øystein Hov.
- Every WP needs a leader who will be responsible for the progress of the WP and the jako of information., Sara Pryer
- A monthly video conference or taping from the WP leader, Oyster
- Communication and information transfer that will not need traveling or conferences is needed, Markku Kulmala
- Discussion groups on the internet, information depository, Oyster
- Can we promise some output from the NCoE, other than the WPs separately, Søren Larsen
- Synergy of the Nordic countries. Increase in influence of Nordic countries is what Nordic CE was formed for. Marja-Liisa Riekkola
- Workshops according to WPs, Pertti Hari
- How will decisions be made in our NCoE? This is what we need to decide and show. Phone calls are a good dynamic way, but it will not be enough for the evaluators. We will also need more static things like conferences. Markku Kulmala
- Two day seminars every year might be a good way. Marja-Liisa Riekkola
- Also courses and workshops, for students to learn form the teachers and a good way to meet and talk for the ones who will teaching. Markku Kulmala
- What will be our product made in the four years of NCoE, H.C.
- Two day seminars with one day of presentations and the second day for WP leaders to show their accomplishments. Results will be put on the internet. Sara Pryer
- Markku Kulmala read from the application what is already agreed on communication and responsibilities and told who are the leaders of WPs or who will be present tomorrow on their behalf.
- Markku Kulmala showed a transparency about research training in NorFA. Benefits from NCoE will be exchange of students, Ph.D.s, professors etc. and common courses.
- Douglas Nilsson asked who will be responsible for taking care of the websites and seminars.
- Markku Kulmala answered: `We will, meaning you and me.`

2.9 Markku Kulmala asked everybody to come tomorrow by 12:00 and for the steering comitie and WP leaders to come by 10:00.

2.10 Markku Kulmala went through the schedule once more:
