Introduction

Boreal forest, Pertti Hari

The magnitude, functioning and long-term temporal variability of natural sources and sinks of atmospheric carbon and other trace gases is an important unknown issue concerning atmospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry, climatology, and ecology. A coherent and thorough analysis of the responses of the carbon dynamics under changing environmental conditions must include investigations at various temporal and spatial scales, ranging from measurements focusing on seasonal micro-scale variability to regional reconstructions over millennial time-scales.

REBECCA aims for an integrative, interdisciplinary, and multi-scale approach into carbon dynamic research, bringing together scientists whose scientific background is not only relevant for research into carbon dynamics, but who represent different analytical skills and who often work on different spatial and temporal aspects of carbon dynamics and environmental change
