I am a joint professor at the University of Helsinki and Finnish
Meteorological Institute. I am also supported by the Vaisala Corporation. Officially, my
title is Professor of Experimental Meteorology. I also have a
part-time appointment at the University of Manchester in the United
Kingdom, and I am an associate at the School
of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds. I am a US citizen,
formerly at the Cooperative
Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies at the University of Oklahoma and the NOAA National Severe Storms
Laboratory.
My research interests are numerous, but include:
- interaction between meteorological
research and operational forecasting
- numerical weather prediction
- synoptic and mesoscale meteorological phenomena such as extratropical
cyclones, fronts, banded precipitation, and instabilities
- convective morphology
- dual-polarimetric radar and winter
precipitation
- precipitation processes
- snow density
- meteorological influences on secondary aerosol production and growth
- mesoscale observing networks
- the scientific peer-review process
