Atmospheric Radiation group

The Atmospheric Radiation Group of the Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki investigates the scattering and absorption of electromagnetic radiation by individual atmospheric particulates, as well as the resulting radiative impacts. Of main interest are the aerosol particles (in particular mineral dust), cloud particles (in particular ice crystals), and precipitating particles (in particular winter-type precipitation) in the wavelength range from ultraviolet to microwaves. The group mostly focuses on basic research related to these issues, but certain key applications, such as remote sensing or radiative forcing calculations, are also considered. The research is mostly conducted in international collaboration, but there are also local collaborators, such as the Planetary System Research or Radar Research groups of the Department of Physics.

The group is led by Ph.D, Academy Research Fellow Timo Nousiainen. Other members of the group are the Doctoral students M.Sc Hannakaisa Lindqvist, M.Sc Päivi Mauno, and M.Sc Jani Tyynelä.
