UnaVEx was discussed at the South African Science Forum in a panel discussion

UnaVEx was discussed at the South African Science Forum in a panel discussion “From Climate Data to Educating Professionals with Environmental Insight” in 27.11.2025. Discussion was hosted by the Finnish embassy in South Africa, specifically Senior Specialist in Higher Education and Science Policy Veera Virmansalo. Professor Pieter Van Zyl from North-West University and dr Ville Vakkari from Finnish Meteorological Institute told about 15 years of measurements at the Welgegund research station. Dr Laura Riuttanen from the University of Helsinki told about atmospheric science education development and research and UnaVEx virtual exhanges. Dr. Crister Nyberg from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences discussed sustainable education pedagogies and their collaboration with professor Kathija Yassin, who also moderated the panel discussion.

Laura Riuttanen also visited University of Johannesburg, where they together with Lee-Ann Modley had a two-hour meeting with eight local UnaVEx moderators. They discussed the ongoing UnaVEx exchange and future development needs. Moderators liked the concept and content of UnaVEx, but were disappointed by the low number and partly limited engagement of the students. It was found fruitful to meet in person and strengthen the connections.
