Origins of ABS

From Two Centers to a Network.

The ABS network started by the cooperation of two Centers of Excellence, the Nordic Centre for Studies of Ecosystem Carbon Exchange, in Interaction with Climate System (NECC) and the Nordic Centre of Excellence for Studies of Biosphere-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions (BACCI). Prof. Dr Anders Lindroth from Lund University, INES and Prof. Dr Markku Kumula from the University of Helsinki set the Research School CBAGGI to bring together top scientists in their fields.

The Research School offered a horizonal learning platform, where Bachelor, Master, and PhD students, Post-Docs, teachers, researchers, and research leaders worked together, organized and participated to courses. For Masters students, it gave an opportunity to work on their Master Thesis as part of the actual, international research projects.

The cooperation by these Centers of Excellence, funded by the NordForsk Research Programme, was active 2003-2010. From then onwards it was the ABS network, founded in 2006 and funded from the Nordplus Programme, that took the lead of the cooperation.

Active, Living Network

We are already quite a large network, still happy to accommodate more actors on the field to our activities. If your University offers environmental education in any of our fields in the Nordics or Baltics, and is interested in joining the ABS Network, do contact us at the ABS Coordination Office. We are happy to get to know you.
