The Online Data Workshop on “Development to the In-situ Component by the Digital Belt and Road (DBAR) and Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) Programmes” took place on 4 May 2022 between Finnish and Chinese colleagues. In total 17 researchers attended the workshop from the University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), International Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) and the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (AirCAS).

The meeting aimed to analyse and map the existing data at CBAS and AirCAS, INAR of UHEL and FMI as well as to discuss joint articles with topical areas on polluted environments, air quality in mega/giga cities, boreal forests and carbon sink and forest fires, combining eddy covariance measurements with satellite data. A series of oral presentation included presentations about megacity (on example of Beijing, China) measurements and data; Smart-SMEAR approach, boreal forest measurements and database; Satellite proxies – FMI experience; Global rainfall-induced landslide modelling and assessment in 2001-2100; Spatio-temporal distributions and influencing factors of atmospheric environment over Xinjiang and Hainan; Spatio- temporal changes in the boreal forest in Siberia over 1985–2015 vs. background of climate change; Impact analysis of gas flaring to the changes of vegetation in Northern Eurasia.

These followed by general discussions on potential topics/ themes of joint publications (about 6-8 peer-reviewed papers) in a special issue in the Big Data journal (with submission of manuscripts by late autumn 2022). In these publications a wide usage of various in-situ ground-based and satellite-based data (from UHEL-INAR and FMI as well as AirCAS and CBAS and other databases) is planned.
