Project Description

The Autumn 2025 School on “Advanced Atmospheric Observations, Data Mining and Modelling” will take place during 22-26 September 2025 (Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece). It is organized by the University of Crete and the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, with the support of the Edu4Climate (https://edu4climate.cyi.ac.cy) Consortium partners. The School focus is on mining and using atmospheric science data, and numerical models. The School will include theoretical training (lectures), visit to Finokalia monitoring station, hands-on computer-based data processing and numerical modeling. The School lectures and hands-on exercises include:

(1) Atmospheric Composition and Climate in the Region
• Advanced observations
• Principles of in-situ and remote sensing observations.
• Data acquisition
• Calibrated observations, citizen science and new technologies

(2) Data Mining and Analysis Tools
• Databases for in-situ, aircraft, remote sensing, and satellite observations
• Statistical analysis, PMF analysis
• AI, Python tools
• Hands on exercises

(3) Atmospheric Transport Modelling
• Principles of forward and inverse modelling.
• Flexpart Atmospheric model.
• Principles of climate chemistry models and Earth system models
• Emission scenarios and databases
• Presentation of applications, examples focusing on the region

Target audience: MSc and PhD students in atmospheric and Earth system sciences.

There is no registration fee.

To participate in the School the applicants are required to apply through the online web-form (see details and link to web-form provided in the announcement).

Application deadline is 29 August 2025.
