Project Description

The Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), University of Helsinki will organize the Autumn School on “Analysis of Atmosphere-Surface Interactions and Feedbacks” during 19-30 October 2026 at the Hyytiälä Forestry Station in Juupajoki, Finland.

The School/ course is aimed for MSc students in atmospheric, biospheric and Earth system sciences. The topic of the course is to study how soil conditions, such as water availability, affect ecosystem–atmosphere interactions. During the course we will analyse data from both agricultural and forest sites. The course is implemented by working in small groups using programming tools (Matlab, Python, R) for statistical analyses and data visualization. Short introductory lectures on relevant topics will be given during the course.

During the course students will learn: (1) how to set research questions and how to use multidisciplinary atmospheric and ecophysiology field data to answer them; (2) how to draw and evaluate scientific conclusions based on the data analysis; and (3) transferrable skills on group work in a multidisciplinary group, making and giving academic presentations to a multidisciplinary audience, principles of scientific writing, project and time management skills, and taking steps towards independent scientist.
