Project Description

The Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS; https://www.icos-cp.eu) on greenhouse gases gathers MSc and PhD students, PostDocs as well as researchers and research technicians from research stations to learn about the carbon cycle and climate change relevant to ICOS. ICOS produces high quality, standardised and open data from 180 measurement stations across 16 European countries. ICOS stations measure greenhouse gas exchanges between the atmosphere, land surface and oceans and their concentration in the air. The typical School programme includes lectures on measurement techniques and practical work on data management and modelling.
The latest 8th ICOS School took place in May 2025 (Hyytiälä, Finland). The next upcoming 9th ICOS School is planned to take place during 18-28 January 2027 at the same location, at the Hyytiälä forestry station. It will be arranged for about 35 students. Applications will be evaluated, and selection is based on motivation letter, supervisor support letter and CV. Candidates from ICOS member countries or candidate countries are preferred, but there are always some places reserved for other students. Note, that almost all costs will be covered by the supporting projects NUBICOS, ICOS Carbon Portal and Helsinki University. A nominal small contribution per student might be imposed, depending on the number of sponsors.
