Project Description

The Interdisciplinary Summer School on Impacts of Climate Extremes will take place during 15-18 June 2026 in the city of Uppsala, Sweden. It is organised by the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes), with financial support from the European Geosciences Union (EGU), and will be held by the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, Sweden.

The School will explore the multifaceted impacts of climate extremes through an explicitly interdisciplinary lens. The programme brings together perspectives from the physical, medical, social and engineering sciences to advance understanding of how extreme events interact with societal processes. The School is designed for PhD students and PostDocs working on climate extremes and their societal impacts. Students in the final stages of their master’s studies are also welcome to apply. Exceptional undergraduate students with strong references may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The school is free (no fee) to attend, including the social dinner, but attendees are responsible for covering their own accommodation and travel expenses. The programme includes also networking opportunities such as structured discussion groups, an elevator pitch session, and a social dinner to facilitate networking.

The School programme highlights: (1) Lectures: Daily thematic lectures on Climate Extremes, Differential Climate Impacts, Climate Extremes and Public Health, and Artificial Intelligence in Climate Science; (2) Exercise Sessions: Application-oriented sessions to practice methodologies discussed during lectures; (3) Soft Skills: Sessions focusing on academic and professional soft skills, including communication to different audiences and participatory research; (4) Social Events: Opportunities for networking and informal exchanges, including a social dinner; and (5) Presentations: Participants will present outcomes of exercise sessions, facilitating academic discourse and feedback.

Registration deadline: 22 March 2026
