NordForsk Call on “Nordic-Baltic initiative on responsible use of Artificial Intelligence”

Making the most of the potentials and mitigating the risks and harmful consequences of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Nordic-Baltic region is the focus of this Call. The Call aim is to fund excellent research activities that address shared Nordic and Nordic-Baltic societal challenges in the context of extensive use and implementation of AI in the region. The initiative should contribute to cross-border mobilisation of capacity and competence building among Nordic and Nordic-Baltic research communities and strengthen networks and collaborations. This initiative seeks to explore the use, development and implementation of AI, on an individual, organisational and societal level, creating prerequisites for responsible and critical future approaches. Approaches on optimisation of existing AI methods or algorithms towards responsible use and functionalities are in focus. As technological development of AI is rapidly evolving, and its use and implementation is changing and developing in unpredictable patterns. Ethical and responsible use of AI is at the heart of this initiative. Applications should respond to societal challenges that the Nordic and Nordic-Baltic region is facing. These challenges include, but are not limited to, ageing populations, ongoing structural developments in the labour market, societal and political polarisation, health systems, education, competence development and lifelong learning and the green transition of the economy. Projects are expected to support optimal utilisation of AI, with minimal risks and threats, and to the benefits of citizens, businesses and the societies.

NordForsk Call on “Nordic Research Infrastructure Hubs”

The Nordic Research Infrastructure Hub is a long-term partnership between Nordic universities, universities of applied sciences, university colleges, research institutes and/or managers of research infrastructure in a consortium that provides a framework for establishing, enhancing and/or expanding RI cooperation in the Nordic region. The overall objective is to strengthen international competitiveness and facilitate the development of world-leading Nordic RI environments based on relevant research and RI priorities. Activities within a hub should generate added value through, for example, exchange of experience regarding best practice, optimised use of existing RIs, efficient use of technologies and procedures, resources and services, cooperation with industry, as well as RI management. Harmonisation processes at the Nordic level are anticipated. Finally, a Nordic hub could facilitate more coordinated Nordic participation in international RI activities, such as the European Strategy Forum for RIs (ESFRI) roadmap. The Call aims for Nordic RI hubs that range from initiatives to establishing and building new partnerships with little or no prior Nordic collaboration, to more developed partnerships that will build on and further strengthen existing Nordic networks and collaborations. Proposals from all fields of research are relevant, i.e., from all of the three overall domains of physical sciences and engineering, life sciences, social sciences and humanities. Collaborations on RIs that are not specific to certain research domains, such as e-Infrastructures, are also relevant to the Call.

NordForsk Call on “Sustainable Futures of Forests”

The Joint Nordic-Baltic Initiative on Sustainable Futures of Forests is initiative and important collaboration that addresses the pressing challenges facing forests in the Nordic and Baltic regions. As climate change accelerates, forests in the Nordic and Baltic countries are becoming increasingly vulnerable to rising temperatures, shifting weather patterns, pests, pathogens, and biodiversity loss. This crucial initiative to support the effective management of forests and the optimal use of forest resources in the face of climate, economic, social, cultural, and environmental challenges. The Call aim is to bring together the collective expertise and resources of the Nordic and Baltic countries. By promoting cross-border co-operation, the initiative encourages a holistic approach to sustainable forestry, integrating scientific research, innovative technology, and sustainable management practices. It creates a platform for sharing knowledge, addressing common challenges, and developing solutions tailored to the region’s unique ecological and economic contexts. The Call purpose is to improve the skills and abilities of early-career scientists in forest-related research in the Nordic and Baltic countries, preparing them to take part in national and international research projects. This provides opportunities for capacity building and addressing complex issues in forest-related research within all disciplines.
