Project Description

The PEEX Head Quarters in Helsinki, Finland, organized and carried out the Pan-Eurasian EXperiment programme e-conference as a series of e-seminars in April 2026. It consisted of 3 online seminars/sessions which took place on 1st, 9th and 14th April 2026 including Plenary Talk by Academician Markku Kulmala on 15th April 2026. The PEEX e-conference included a series of invited keynote talks; presentations about research and educational projects/ activities from newly and already collaborating Universities/ Organizations; discussions on future collaboration in a frame of climate change, air quality and environmental research as well as research infrastructures; and discussions for the COST Action proposal improvements. Note, that the 3rd seminar/session took place (on 14 April 2026) in a hybrid (online/onsite) mode as a part of the Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center (ACCC) Impact Week (https://www.acccflagship.fi/index.php/5th-accc-impact-week-2026), which took place during 14-17 April 2026 in at the Sofia Cultural Centre in Vuosaari, Helsinki, Finland.

The first online seminar/session on 1 April 2026 focused mostly on newly joined Partners/ Organizations and included talks about research and educational activities in different fields of the Earth’s, climate, environmental, air quality, etc. at the Institute of Ionosphere of the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences (IoI KAZ, Kazakhstan); Charles University in Prague (CUNI; Czech Republic); O.M. Beketov National University of Urban Economy in Kharkiv (BNUUEK, Ukraine); Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC, Norway); National Meteorological Administration (NMA, Romania);  Climate, Atmosphere and Water Research Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (CAWRI-BAS, Bulgaria); Saarland University (UdS, Germany); Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH, Greece); and others.

The second online seminar/session on 9 April 2026 focused mostly on already actively working/ collaborating Partners/ Organizations. The series of presentations included: Integrated systems and analysis of urban mobility for climate-neutral and sustainable cities in Europe and China;  Meteorological and climatic research at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; Renewable energy – Integrated master program at the Arctic University of Norway; Overview of EC-Earth activities within the PEEX modelling platform; Seamless modelling studies of aerosol-meteorology interactions at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute; Integrating climate education in agricultural curricula: institutional mission and capacity building; Air quality monitoring using low-cost sensors network in Amman city in Jordan; Digital Sustainable Development goals programme of China; International collaboration: AISUS+ Initiative: AI-empowered climate and air quality system for urban sustainability and climate resilience;  Fast‑track futures: bridging education and work; Persistent low-water phase of major Ukrainian rivers flowing into the northwestern Black Sea under ongoing climate change; Regional scale modelling for Europe: towards climate and air quality modelling convergence; Development and application of atmospheric transport models for assessing radioactively contaminated sites; and others.

The third online seminar/session on 14 April 2026 was co-organized with The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). The seminar highlighted several major EU Horizon 2020 projects, including, RI-URBANS, CRiceS, FOCI, as well as Erasmus+ educational activities, collaboration with China, and PEEX COST Action proposal. The talks delivered included: Building Scientific Capacity in the Global South for Climate Justice;  Eye on Methane: From Measurement to Momentum; Summary of recently completed RI-URBANS project on observational/ measurement activities;  Summary of recently completed CRiceSproject on modelling activities;  Summary of ongoing FOCI project; Overview on recent research in China for the PEEX domain; Educational activities in Erasmus+ projects CLUVEX/ UnaVEx/ ClimEd – virtual exchanges as trainings for Climate Messengers, Climate Advocates, Climate Experts; and COST Action “Pan-Eurasian EXperiment – Europe – Near Europe Neighborhood countries Earth System Research Network” (PEEX-EU-NEN-ReN).
