Project Description

The Summer School 2026 on “Formation and Growth of Atmospheric Aerosols” will be held during 17-27 August 2026 at the Hyytiälä (Finland) forestry station. The organizers are the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) and The Doctoral Programme in Science at the University of Helsinki, the Nordic Graduate School “Biosphere-Carbon-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions” (CBACCI), Nordic Master’s Degree Programme “Atmosphere-Biosphere-Studies” (ABS), Integrated Land Ecosystem – Atmosphere Process Study (iLEAPS), The Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center (ACCC), The Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS), and Pan-Eurasian EXperiment (PEEX) programme.

Summer school topics that will be covered include the following:

  • Atmospheric aerosols
  • Atmospheric observations of aerosol formation and growth
  • Aerosol particle formation mechanisms
  • Thermodynamics of aerosol formation
  • Aerosol dynamics: condensation, coagulation, deposition, general dynamic equation
  • Aerosols, clouds and climate
  • Large-scale modelling of atmospheric aerosol
  • Gaseous precursors of atmospheric aerosols and their chemistry
  • Laboratory investigations of nucleation and nanoparticle growth
  • Computational methods related to particle formation
  • Instrumentation to detect particles
  • Analysis of new particle formation events
  • Secondary aerosols and air quality
  • Secondary organic aerosol and aerosol mass spectrometry

During 10-day course, participants (PhD students and advanced MSc students in atmospheric sciences) will gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental theories of new particle formation. The program also includes introductions to, as well as state-of-the-art insights into, mass spectrometry, regional and global modelling, and quantum chemistry calculations. The course is carefully designed to provide a strong foundation to start or further advance participants’ journey in atmospheric science. Beyond the academic program, the summer school offers a valuable opportunity to connect with fellow researchers at a similar career stage, exchange ideas, and build lasting professional relationships – while also enjoying the inspiring natural surroundings of the Hyytiälä forestry station.
