Project Description

Are you interested to learn how to create a biosphere-atmosphere model? Tired of running existing models without a detailed understanding what is going on inside the code? If yes, you should consider participating in 2-weeks Summer School on “First Steps in Biosphere-Atmosphere Modelling” in the city of Lahti, Finland, 10-21 August 2026.
The organizers are the University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology, Department of Computational Engineering and Lahti University Campus.
In this intensive course you will create your own one-dimensional chemistry transport model including emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds, deposition of aerosols and gases and aerosol dynamics. In the end of this course everyone has – with intensive one-by-one assistants of the teachers – constructed their own model which they will then apply to selected small scientific tasks. Additionally, we include lectures on applications of machine learning methods in atmospheric modelling.
Students (BSc, MSc, PhD) and postdoctoral researchers are welcome! Registration deadline: 31 May 2026 See more details and information in announcement as well as at the course website to get a feeling what former course participants thought about this event.
