August 2020 (postponed 2021) – Hyytiälä Summer Course – Formation and Growth of Atmospheric Aerosols Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) of University of Helsinki organizes, together with collaborators, the summer school ‘Formation and Growth of Atmospheric Aerosols’ on 10-19 August 2020 at the Hyytiälä SMEAR II station, in southern Finland. The course is aimed for PhD students and advanced MSc students in atmospheric sciences and is worth 5 ECTS. The topics covered in the course include, for example, the dynamics of atmospheric aerosols, the formation and growth of aerosol particles, climate and air quality effects of aerosol particles, and gas-phase chemistry related to aerosol formation. The main teachers of the course are Prof. Markku Kulmala and PhD Jenni Kontkanen. In addition, there will be several invited lecturers from INAR and other institutes. The course consists of lectures and exercises and there will be an exam at the end of the course. The course also includes a visit to the SMEAR II station and recreational events such as sauna, swimming, and excursions. The course fee is 1600 EUR. It covers all academic and social program during the course, accommodation and meals in Hyytiälä, and transportation between Helsinki and Hyytiälä. For doctoral students of University of Helsinki, the fee is covered by ATM-DP Doctoral Programme. Jul-Aug 2020 (postponed Jul-Aug 2021) – Young Scientist Summer School on “Multi-Scales and Processes Integrated Modelling, Observations and Assessment for Environmental Applications” The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR) in collaboration with the Moscow State University (MSU) and the University of Tyumen (UTMN) organizes the young scientist summer school (YSSS) on “Multi-Scales and Processes Integrated Modelling, Observations and Assessment for Environmental Applications” (27 Jul – 7 Aug 2020, Moscow, Russia). YSSSchool Aim: introduce young generation of researchers to special topics in atmospheric and environmental sciences, Earth system modelling approaches and applications. During the school, participants will learn about the current progress and challenges in Earth system research; meteorological, hydrological and atmospheric composition modelling and observations (including ground-based and remote-sensing); and modern technologies for environmental studies and assessments (including health impacts). May 2020 – Training school on Atmospheric observations of aerosols, clouds and trace gases The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) within the framework of the European research infrastructure ACTRIS, as well as iLEAPS, PEEX, the National ATM-DP Doctoral Program, the Nordic Graduate School “Biosphere-Carbon-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions” (CBACCI) and Nordic Master’s Degree Program “Atmosphere-Biosphere-Studies” (ABS) organizers training school on "Atmospheric observations of aerosols, clouds and trace gases" (May 15-22, 2020 at Hyytiälä forestry field station, Finland). This is an advanced course on atmospheric observations of aerosols, clouds and trace gases. The topics covered on the course include: in-situ measurements of aerosol concentration, size distribution, optical properties and chemical composition, measurement of reactive trace gases, ice nuclei and clouds as well as remote sensing of trace gases, aerosols and clouds. The students are expected to learn to understand the basic principles behind each measurement method, to know the most important instrumentation (including their advantages and limitations), and to discuss current research questions in the field. We will also address issues related to data management, data analysis and integration of different observations. April 2020 (postponed Nov-Dec 2020) - PEEX-AC research training intensive course on “Multi-Scales and -Processes Modelling and Assessment for Environmental Applications” The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR) in collaboration with the Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) organizes research training intensive course on “Multi-Scales and -Processes Modelling and Assessment for Environmental Applications” (20-25 April 2020, St. Petersburg, Russia). Course Aim: to introduce young generation of researchers to special topics in atmospheric & environmental sciences, Earth system modelling approaches and applications. During the intensive course, participants will learn about the current progress and challenges in multi-scales & –processes modelling for Earth system research; meteorological/ climate and atmospheric composition modelling and models evaluation. The programme will consist of theoretical lectures & practical exercises (to be accomplished by students as small-scale research projects ending with presentation of the project results). The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR) is pleased to announce the intensive course "Advanced analysis of atmosphere-surface interactions and feedbacks" to be held at the Hyytiälä Forestry Field Station (2-13 March, 2020; Hyytiälä, Finland). The course is based on intensive work in small groups, utilizing advanced programming tools for statistical analysis (e.g. MATLAB, Python, R). This course in particular has the following main topic: Trends of atmospheric and ecosystem parameters in the boreal forest over the past 25 years. See more information.   

October 2019 - Hyytiälä Autumn School 2019 – Analysis of Atmosphere-Surface Interactions and Feedbacks

The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR), is proud to announce the intensive course “Analysis of atmosphere-surface interactions and feedbacks” to be held in Hyytiälä, Finland on 14–25 October 2019. The course consists of lectures and hands-on exercises, with the main emphasis placed on intensive group work and final report written after the course. The course is aimed at Master and PhD students in atmospheric and biospheric sciences. During the course the students will utilize aerosol, air ion, trace gas, meteorological and eco-physiological data measured at the SMEAR II and other field stations in order to learn advanced data treatment and data analysis methods. June 2019 – Research Training Course - Seamless / Online Integrated Meteorology-Chemistry-Aerosols Multi-Scale and –Processes Modelling

The University of Helsinki (UHEL), the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), and the University of Tyumen (UTMN) are jointly organizing the research training course “Seamless / Online Integrated Meteorology-Chemistry-Aerosols Multi-Scale and -Processes Modelling” (24-29 June, Tyumen, Russia). See announcement and summary of the course. The training included: lecturing with respect to theoretical and practical aspects of the Enviro-HIRLAM modelling system (with focus on research and development). The theoretical aspects included: weather modelling in European community; advantages/ shortcomings of on-line vs. off-line approaches; model structure, downscaling, components, schematics; specific features of urban areas and modules/ parameterizations for urbanization; land-cover and land-use classification and datasets; statistics on urban lands; modelling results – meteorology and atmospheric composition - with/without modules implemented; model in other projects and applications. The practical aspects included: introduction into Small-Scale Research Projects, SSRPs (with background discussions); analysis of meteorological situations for selected cases/ dates; technical aspects of modelling and modules implementation; model runs for selected dates/cases; visualization of model output/ results and analysis of impact on meteorology and atmospheric composition; and finally - oral presentations with defence of SSRPs. 

June 2019 - Summer School 2019 – First Steps in Biosphere-Atmosphere Modelling

The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR) and the Lund University (LU) are pleased to announce the intensive course "First steps in Biosphere-Atmosphere Modelling" to be held at the Lund University (10-20 June 2019; Lund, Sweden). During the course, everyone will program an atmospheric boundary layer model with chemistry and aerosol dynamics, including: equations of flow for the atmospheric boundary layer with the first order turbulence closure, 1D column model and numerical solution, emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from vegetation, modelling of chemical kinetics by systems of differential equations, deposition of aerosols and numerical solutions for aerosol formation and growth. Autumn School 2018 - Analysis of atmosphere-surface interactions and feedbacks, Hyytiälä 8th-19th October 2018.  University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Reseach, INAR, is proud to announce the intensive course 'Analysis of atmosphere-surface interactions and feedbacks' to be held in Hyytiälä, Finland on 8th–19th October, 2018. The course is based on intensive work in small groups, with MATLAB being the main tool for statistical analysis. This year’s main topic is effect of drought on biogeochemical cycles at SMEAR stations. The responsible teachers are prof. Timo Vesala, prof. Jaana Bäck and university lecturer Taina Ruuskanen. June 2017 – Research Training Course – Online integrated meteorology-chemistry-aerosols modelling

The University of Helsinki (UHEL) in collaboration with the Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) organizers research training course on online integrated meteorology-chemistry-aerosols modelling to be held at the RSHU (26 Jun – 1 Jul 2017, St.Petersburg, Russia). The course content included the lecturing on advantages of on-line/ seamless modelling; Enviro-HIRLAM model schematics, structure, components, downscaling, collaboration, research and development, science education, dissemination, new products and applications; urban areas and their characteristics, urban boundary layer, approaches and treatment of land-cover/use and urbanization of the models; urban lands, urban districts in metropolitan areas: classification and characteristics; global aerosol cycles, aerosols feedbacks, emissions, aerosol microphysics and implementation in the models; examples of the model applications for Copenhagen, Paris, Shanghai and their metropolitan areas (from completed research projects), computational requirements and resources for operational runs. The lecturing also included a series of educational lectures on the monitoring of the ECMWF forecast system; group velocity thinking (in contrast to PV-thinking); statistical verification and validation of NWP systems; Kalman filtering of operational NWP; Bayesian statistics; Coriolis force and Coriolis effect; questions of concern and importance for dynamical meteorology. International Conference and Young Scientists School on Environmental Observations, Modeling and Information Systems ENVIROMIS-2014, June 28- July 5

The eight in the series, the multidisciplinary Conference comprising elements of Early Career Scientists School will be devoted to the state-of-the-art and usage of modern environmental observation techniques, computational and information technologies for assessment, modeling and mitigation of Northern Eurasia environment variations under natural and anthropogenic pressures including those caused by the Global Climate Change. It is aimed at filling the gap between basic science achievements and their practical applications in this domain. Also it addresses a critically important issue – a generation gap occurring in Environmental Sciences. To mitigate its consequences and to facilitate professional skill growth for young scientists, a number of invited lectures devoted to the state-of-the-art in the environmental research will be presented by leading specialists, which will allow young participants to get first-hand information on hot topics in Earth System Sciences and attract them professionally to this very important research area. Chandrasekar, University of Helsinki and Colorado State University Guest lecturers: Prof. Pavlos Kollias, McGill University The summer school is intended for graduate students, scientists and operational users who want to receive: - up-to-date background on principles and applications of weather and cloud radars - unique hands-on experience using data from US DOE ARM radars, weather radar of Univ. of Helsinki and CSU-CHILL US DOE ARM mobile facility will be deployed in Hyytiälä during the course.
