The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR) is pleased to announce the intensive course "Advanced analysis of atmosphere-surface interactions and feedbacks" to be held at the Hyytiälä Forestry Field Station (2-13 March, 2020; Hyytiälä, Finland). The course is based on intensive work in small groups, utilizing advanced programming tools for statistical analysis (e.g. MATLAB, Python, R). This course in particular has the following main topic: Trends of atmospheric and ecosystem parameters in the boreal forest over the past 25 years. See more information.

 

The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR), is proud to announce the intensive course “Analysis of atmosphere-surface interactions and feedbacks” to be held in Hyytiälä, Finland on 14–25 October 2019. The course consists of lectures and hands-on exercises, with the main emphasis placed on intensive group work and final report written after the course. The course is aimed at Master and PhD students in atmospheric and biospheric sciences. During the course the students will utilize aerosol, air ion, trace gas, meteorological and eco-physiological data measured at the SMEAR II and other field stations in order to learn advanced data treatment and data analysis methods. The University of Helsinki (UHEL), the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), and the University of Tyumen (UTMN) are jointly organizing the research training course “Seamless / Online Integrated Meteorology-Chemistry-Aerosols Multi-Scale and -Processes Modelling” (24-29 June, Tyumen, Russia). The training included: lecturing with respect to theoretical and practical aspects of the Enviro-HIRLAM modelling system (with focus on research and development). The theoretical aspects included: weather modelling in European community; advantages/ shortcomings of on-line vs. off-line approaches; model structure, downscaling, components, schematics; specific features of urban areas and modules/

parameterizations for urbanization; land-cover and land-use classification and datasets; statistics on urban lands; modelling results – meteorology and atmospheric composition - with/without modules implemented; model in other projects and applications. The practical aspects included: introduction into Small-Scale Research Projects, SSRPs (with background discussions); analysis of meteorological situations for selected cases/ dates; technical aspects of modelling and modules implementation; model runs for selected dates/cases; visualization of model output/ results and analysis of impact on meteorology and atmospheric composition; and finally - oral presentations with defence of SSRPs.

The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (UHEL-INAR) and the Lund University (LU) are pleased to announce the intensive course "First steps in Biosphere-Atmosphere Modelling" to be held at the Lund University (10-20 June 2019; Lund, Sweden). During the course, everyone will program an atmospheric boundary layer model with chemistry and aerosol dynamics, including: equations of flow for the atmospheric boundary layer with the first order turbulence closure, 1D column model and numerical solution, emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from vegetation, modelling of chemical kinetics by systems of differential equations, deposition of aerosols and numerical solutions for aerosol formation and growth.
